A handmade case binding book is a labor of love, skillfully crafted using traditional bookbinding techniques. The most beautiful and highest quality materials are used in a process of many meticulous steps that take days to create each treasured book art vessel.
Covers are made with Japanese Chiyogami handmade paper or Italian Florentine and Tassotti papers, with spines of linen and silk.
Book blocks of Hahnemühle Bugra paper are hand torn and sewn. Hahnemühle Bugra is an elegant 130 gsm paper with a natural deckled edge and neutral pH made in Germany. A superbly stable surface for pen & ink, graphite, colored pencil, gouache, and even markers.
Tassotti Papers
I’ve selected some of my favorite Tassotti papers for the covers. Grafiche Tassotti is the present heir to the lineage of hundreds-of-years old master printmaking work of the Remondini family from Bassano del Grappa in northern Italy.
They successfully continue their mission to become a creative print workshop where expert hands create refined and exclusive products, preserving an ancient artisan tradition, while attentively safeguarding the planet, using only environmentally friendly inks.
Their prints are exquisite and timeless, and I have the grand fortune of being able to purchase these papers directly from Italy.
Hahnemühle Bugra Paper
Hahnemühle Bugra paper is a preferred choice among artists, writers, printmakers and enthusiasts. It’s made from high-quality cotton fibers, carefully selected and processed to ensure consistency, durability, and archival quality.
It’s known for its versatility, suitable for a wide range of applications, including printmaking, drawing, pastels, charcoal, mixed media, and fountain pen.
Soft white and earth tone Hahnemühle Bugra is used in the Hypatia book blocks, the bugra color complimenting the decorative paper cover.
